What about SCARS? - How to take Self Soft Tissue Work Further!

One of the biggest trends and continues become a tool that every trainer utilizes is Self Myofascial Release. SMFR (Self Myofascial Release) education and implementation is a great advancement in the health and fitness industry because it is in the best interest of our clients, we are obtaining greater goals, and decreasing pain!

A story about fascia.........

Fascia is a thick membranous envelope with a lubricating fluid. This is a continuous tissue that extends from head to toe, front to back, surrounding every orgran, blood vessel, nerve, muscle, EVERYTHING!.

The purpose of the Fascial System: The Support and Lubricate. An example of this is to create a gliding in between tissue, orgrans, and bone without any "catch"

Pull on a persons arm, they feel it in their shoulder and neck, even if only the skin is in traction. In health, fluids flow with relative ease from one fascial compartment to the next. When a traumatic injury pattern is established, the fascia may twist and compress. The exchange of fluid may become compromised, and physiology may be impaired.

What if there is an Adhesion between Neighbouring Tissues?

There will be pain in the area, due to friction of the surrounding tissue's, and there will be dysfunction along the myofascial chain.

An untreated scar will cause this. After the scar has become adhesed, it will bind all the tissue's, decrease the fluid, and increase the friction. No matter how many passes or SFMR techniques you perform, this will not decrease!

A common treatable scar that we see on a weekly basis at DT&R is a Scar from Appendix Surgery. Patients usually come into our office complaining of shoulder or knee pain, and after evaluation, we discover an adhesion, "unhappy" scar.

This scar sits right at the change of direction in the Anterior Spiral Fascial Chain and will cause a inferior tension on the Shoulder Joint, and Superior tension on the opposite knee!

Now, if you are a trainer or coach reading this blog, SCARS can cause havoc and headaches if you are trying to get your clients tissue to become more "pliable".

We receive emails from trainers all the time asking what the next step is and what to do if you came across a road block in SMFR....

The best way is to refer out, and get the scar to become pliable and moving better, then the practitioner should send that client back to yourself to work on the rest of the Soft Tissue and Myofascial Work.

What will the practitioner do?

- Graston or SASTM Technique
- Massage: Frictions around the Scar or Adhesed area
- Osteopathy: Scar Work (In my opinion, one of the best routes to go!)

How do you know if the scar is adhesed?

There is a simple way to assess if a scar is adhesed and causing issue or not.

1) Find the Scar
2) Go 2 Finder breathes Medially, Laterally, Inferior, or Superior from the scar site
3) Slightly contact skin and Fascia, then apply tension distally from the Scar
4) DOES IT MOVE??

If it does, there is an adhesion present. Refer or work with a practitioner that performs scar work, or Myofascial Release. Once treatment is underway, start to foam roll, use the stick, and other other tool become mobile, strong, and healthy!

On a separate note, we are going to dive into more BUSINESS info on here. If there is anything that you would like covered, post it at the bottom.

Adductor Exercise Protocol and Cool Video's!

Here in Southern Ontario we are a hockey nation. It has been a great start to the year, the Maple Leafs are 4-0 (best start since I can remeber......), a few of our players are already in talks with Junior Clubs, and the Canadian Human Performance Centre and DT&R are expanding rapidly!

With the cold weather, hockey arena's back open, and hockey fever in the air, there seems to be a new wave of injuries that we are seeing in our clinic: Adductor Strains.

If an athlete comes into our facility with a "Groin Pull", it brings 2 conclusions to mind:

1) There is an imbalance present that is creating stress through the adductor muscle group

2) There is an improper conditioning and exercise progran implementation. (1 usually is lead into #2)

Most patients that come through our office, currently or have recieved regular manual therapy for the problem. This usually consist of a modality like ultrasound or laser on the affected area, massage thechniques or active release, and maybe some taping.

These athletes always seem to come back with the same complaint...........GROIN PAIN!

Why don't we fix the root of the problem so this never comes back and the athlete gets back to play or life at optimal performance??

A few Things to look for with "Adductor Pain":

1) The strength and muscle firing of the QL on the same side of the dysfunction. This could also lead to an imbalance in the pelvis which will cause dysfunction. There is a strong Osteopathic relationship between the QL and Adductor Group. Working and relieving one group, can counter balance the other, and vice-versa..

2) Pelvis Alignment. In my personal experience, the Innomonant or hip bone on the side of the dysfunction has an Anterior Rotation and Superior Shear. This will show as unlevel and ASIS (anterior superior illiac spine)

3) The Glute Max and External Rotaters are tight and weak. Yes, this is possible to have both present at once. This will cause a External Rotation of the femur resulting in excess force and strain through Adductor Magnus.

4) The Pubic Symphisis Joint. NO ONE EVER ASSES THIS JOINT. Either because the practitioner is nervous or unaware, it must be assesed and treat for every condition in the body!

5) Ankle Mobility. If the is a lack of Dorsi Flexion at the Sub Talar Joint, there will be an excess of Knee Flexion and Internal Rotation, thus causing a shear at the knee, and more stress through the Adductor Group.

Adductor Prevention is important to keep athletes on the field or ice. We should always be assessing biomechanics of the lower extremity, and muscle strength test to keep our patients and clients healthy.

Here is a video protocol. It is a basic stream of exercises for the readers at home that would like to prevent this injury:

2. We have just launched a great video with Mindi Obrien from Team Obrien Fitness and Dynamic Rehab. Rachel LeBlanc, Canada's newest IFBB Pro flew in from New Bruinswick (Far East Coast) over the summer to recieve treatments and workouts. Check out the video!

3. For all the Manual Therapist that read this blog, we are working on a new project that is going to take your business and practice to the next level.........that is all we are going to unleash now........

Why are we still chasing neck pain?

Everything I read online, from blogs, twitter, accounts, and articles, everyone seems to be a true advocate of find the dysfunction, treat the dysfunction, and pain will go away!

When it comes to the neck, all these rules seemingly disappear!

When a patient/client with chronic posterior neck pain (fairly common now in our society), most practitioners seem to work strictly on those muscles, the ones in pain!

Why do we do this? Does it Help Our Patients?

Most professionals do not truly understand the neck or sometimes weary of entering the anterior structures because there is so much “stuff” located here, like the brachial plexus, important arties, and lymph nodes.

There are many important structures that need to be addressed when dealing with posterior neck pain. For the purpose of this informational blog, we are only going to go through two:

Two anatomical components that we should look for when treating chronic neck pain or even shoulder pain is Cervical Fascia and Longus Colli Muscle. Working on those muscles in the back of the neck will only create instant pain relief.......and only last for a few hours.

First to the Anterior Fascia Structures: We are going to focus on Deep Cervical Fascia

Most of us tend to think of the myofascia, or the fascia, in terms of the musculature. The fascia, in its broader context, lines all the body structures, including the muscles, joints, and bones. Consider the middle cervical fascia, a structure that connects a whole series of muscles throughout the front of the neck

The deep cervical fascia surrounds the body of the vertebrae in the cervical spine. The Anterior part of this fascia extends down to the first rib. Motions palpate the cervical spine and look for the most restricted region from C2 down. On a personal note, I look to start laterally and move medially.

The correction of this fascia can follow the assessment.

The second anatomical structure that should always be assessed and treated with neck complaints is the Longus Colli muscle.

The deep flexor muscles of the neck are often referred to as the abdominals of the neck. Proper strengthening, manual therapy, and motion of these muscles are vary important for stability of the neck, and balance.

They lie right over the anterior cervical vertebrae. To get to this muscle, push aside the trachea and apply gentle pressure with your fingertips. Be wary of the carotid artery and internal jugular vein

Here is a great video that is for strengthening of the deep muscles of the neck:

Another Great way to Stretch Anterior Neck Muscles:

Sit or stand with your right hand around
your neck and your fingers and thumb on
the muscles on either side of your throat.
You may place your left hand on top of
your right for support as shown. Start with
your hands close to your chin and begin
with your chin at your chest

Slowly bend your neck backward as
you simultaneously slide your hands
toward your chest, stretching the muscles
on the front of your neck.

CAUTION: Always move slowly when doing neck stretches.
Try to elongate your neck so you don’t compress your vertebrae
(bones). Read all the instructions and cautions thoroughly
before beginning. You should never feel pain!

Misunderstood Rehabilitation of the Shoulder

One of the most common injuries we see here at the Dynamic Clinic is shoulders. We have seen everything from adhesive capsulities (aka Frozen Shoulder), Tendinitis, Bursitis, a humerus split in half like a piece of chopped wood, Labral Issue's, pretty much everything in our therapy school books and beyond!

In my opinion, the shoulder is one of the most complex joints in the body to rehab and can be affected by every other part of the body.

One of the major issues with the shoulder is the neighbouring anatomical structures like the Thoracic Spine, and Visceral system need to be dealt with during rehab.

Also, the shoulder is a major pivot point of all Myofascial Chains of the body. An adhesion or lesion at the shoulder can cause a ripple effect along any fascial chain, causing dysfunction at multiple different area's. If there is an adhesion or lesion present somewhere else in the body (Liver, or opposite hip most common), than this can cause dysfunction in the shoulder.

In this blog post, my goal is not to go to far in detail about everything that can affect the shoulder, but to educate on the Rotator Cuff. Everybody has heard of the infamous "rotator cuff". Most of us think that is one muscle that rotates the shoulder, or more specifically the Glenohumeral Joint.

The rotator cuff is actually comprised of 4 separate muscle, all with separate actions. Across the board, the rotator cuff primary job is to actually stabilize the shoulder, THEN rotate.

Every wants to do rotation exercise, and more specifically, External Rotation before the muscles can even do there primary job.

Prior to any shoulder rehab or workout protocol, we must first asses 4 different componants:

Prep Workout Prior to Shoulder Rehab:

1) Make sure there is No Myofascial Adhesion's, ANYWHERE!

2) Make sure there is proper Thoracic Spine Mobility, if not, fix it.

3) Make sure proper body alignment. Hips, Legs, Shoulders, and Clavicle.

4) Make Sure there is adequate mmobility at the Clavicle, if not, always check Subclavius Muscle. If the clavicle is "locked", you will be in a nasty surprise for your shoulder(s).

Once these have all been worked on and cleared up, it is now appropriate to work on Shoulder Stability.

Our rule of thumb is the make the joint stabilized, then we can go for mobility.

On Friday October we are going to release a T-Spine Warm Up and Mobility Protocol, than a week today, we are going to release the ultimate shoulder rehab protocol.

Stay Tuned to this blog!

The Forgotten Foot Pt.1 and My Top 5 Blogs!

The Forgotten Foot...is an anatomical structure that influences the entire body.

Up to 25,000 steps per day (Average 10,000, but in our line of work it is a bit more!), Responsible for our Vertical Equiliberum, has proprioceptors that balance the ENTIRE body, and EVERY MYOFASCIAL CHAIN has a connection here.

So why does every trainer/therapist overlook this area when it comes to exercise programs and rehabilitaiton?

In Exercise and functional rehab, our goal is to create a balanced body. I am not talking about balancing on a BOSU (which you will never see in our facility!)  I'm talking about balance as One Unit working together in movement, digestion, power, and cohesiveness!

To create that type of body or to rehab any low back, shoulder, and visceral dysfunction we need to always start by assesing and look at the foot first.

Besides the static function of absorbing gravity and create propulsion simultaneously, here are some interesting facts that we should know when talking about the foot:

A) The Sinus Tarsi, located between the Talus and Calcaneus, has the intraosseus talcalcaneal ligament which houses proprioceptors responsble for balanceing the entire body. Opening up this area can increase venous drainage of the entire foot!

B) Has a Diagram (Plantar Diaghram: Muscles that run horizantal and repsonsible for pressure regulation). This diaghram works with the Pelvic Diaghram, Thoracic Diaghram, and Cranial Diaghram.

C) The Subtalar Joint: Most Critical Joint in the Body.

D) Talus Bone. Has no muscle attachments (Hint: Every important bone in the body that should have great mobility, does not have muscle attachment). This bone is a POSTURAL BONE, relates to C1, T4, and L5. Having postural issues? - No one has shown you to check mobility at this bone, eh?

E) In Chinese Medicine and Merdian Therapies, each line (which ends at the Toe) corresponds to every organ vital to survival: Spleen, Liver, Stomach, Gall Bladder, and Bladder. MYOFASCIAL Adhesions, will cause a "block" in each orgran.

F) EVERY MYOFASCIAL CHAIN IS CONNECTED TO THE FOOT!

Think you have other issue's with your client or yourself that you can't figure out? Thought you did soft tissue work and mobility stuff everywhere possible? Check the integrity of the feet!

Even if you don't know anything about the foot, start to incorporate Stick Work and Golf Ball Rolling across your feet.

"S*!&T that Get's You Motivated Mondays!" - Define Your Success!

Today is the first day that we are going to upload our new blog posting: "S*!&T that Get's You Motivated Mondays!"

Lewis on the Way Home

We are publishing this a little late, our puppy (also known as "king of the gym") Lewis went into an operation today. If you are a regular to the Canadian Human Performance Centre and Dynamic training & Rehabilitation, Lewis is a patient and client favorite at the clinic. We work with a number of chidren, and Lewis is a great addition to the children that come through.

As a busines coach and mentor that works with many therapist and trainers, my goal is to initially find that fire, the passion that drives all of us to work in the best industry in the world!

Every Monday Morning, Taylor and I sit down and review the ups and down of our week prior, plan for our upcoming week and talk shop with fit business, training philosophy and the "industry"

One of our goals is to give you a "snip-it" of our Monday Morning talk. We want to inspire, motivate, and remind why you are in this industry and how you can make a difference!

1. What Defines Your Success In the fitness Field??

We recieve this questions on a daily basis from inquires about our mentorship programs. Every trainer and therapist wants to be successful. But what is success?

Is it Cash Flow? Gym Expansion? Being able to take nice Vacations?

To Taylor and Myself, our success is not determined by a measurable number. It is determined by our clients success. Clients that have lost weight, Patients leaving our clinic pain free, a competitior winning the Skinny Jeans Challenge and giving back to fitness, THAT IS OUR SUCCESS!

Being successful in this industry is being the best at what you do, helping your clients & patients, and striving for excellence.

We are practitioners in the best business in the world. We can change lives, save lives, motivate, and educate. Strive to be the best!

We want to know how you define your success as a Trainer, Therapist, or Doctor. Leave a comment in the comment box and for the best "Definition of Your Success" comment we recieve, we will award it with a BP Corrective Exercise Package!

2. Fascia. It is one thing you should know about, incorperate with your clients, but will never know everything!

If you have never read an article, opened a book, or looked at an outline of fascia. I HIGHLY RECOMEND YOU DO THAT NOW!

In the 1980's fascia was the "stuff" thrown on the floor when we wernt through Cadaver Labs. Now, it is one of the most studied and researched part of anatomy in the human body. It contains more nerve endings than muscle tissue.

It is now considered a system all to itself. If every componant of the human body were absent except fascia, it would still cover every part and crevis in the body.

There is increasing interest in certain therapeutic communities in the role that fascia plays in musculoskeletal strain disorders such as low-back instability and postural strain patterns of all types, fibromyalgia, pelvic pain, and respiratory dysfunction, chronic stress injures, as well as in wound healing, trauma recovery and repair.

Self Fascial Work should be complimented in every program. Here are some great Techniques:

Fascial Resource: http://www.fasciacongress.org/2009/index.htm

3. Instead of Making Excuses, Make Improvements

Now, this is a personal pet-peeve of mine. In every aspect of our industry we can make improvements with this point.

We are in a business of helping people. Whether you are a doctor, personal training ata  club, or massage therapist we all have a unified goal of improving health and well-being (I dispise the word Well-Being, but it is needed here).

I recieve email after email, with excuses of why that cleint can't lose weight, or why that patient is still in pain.

If you haven't defined your success from #1 yet, this may be a point to look at. Be the best and ahead of the game, instead of making an excuse find the solution! This is our success, be passionate about what you are going to accomplish.

It is your JOB and Duty to find a solution to an issue your patient is having. They are coming to you, because they have a trust that you are doing this.

We are the key holding to unlock the health out of your patients and clients.

4. This gets me motivated!

Broken Foot?, Small Gym with Little Equipment?, Competition 6 Weeks Out?

Kasia Sitarz, Owner of small Personal Trainign Studio and Massage Clinic 45 Minutes North of DT&R, shows us the solution to a problem that most trainers and practitioners makes.

5. On the game plan for this week:

This week is going to be extremely busy at DT&R but Great! We have multiple events we are working towards, an article being published and filming a few videos.

On Wednesday, we will publish some businbess information that will help change your practi and fitbiz.

A Secret to having a Succesful Business in Health Care

On Fridays, everyone in the Health and Fitness Blogging realm seem to be on a tangent of posting "randomness" from the week prior. I actually look forward to each friday after a week in the trench's at DT&R sitting back and scolling through these blog's that provide comic relief, and clairty about past events. I still think the Friday Blog Stream may be overkill, but those who do it, and do it well, keep it coming.

On our blog we are going to switch gears. I am not going to post randomness on here every friday. My goal is to inspire, motivate, and educate Trainers and Therapist a like. If I can inspire a trainer to learn more, think out of the box, and be a leading power in their niche, than I have completed my job.

Moving forward, every monday we are going to post "S*!&t that get's you Motivated Monday's".

The goal of our Monday Post is simple, provide information that will make you look further into what you are doing, dig up a new book, be inspired to get out their and be a pioneer of the best industry in the world!

Until Monday, we are going to post an answer to multiple question that we recieve over email at DT&R and BP.

1. Taylor and I receive numerous emails on a daily basis from trainers and therapist asking us "secrets of making money and being succesful in the health industry"

What is the secret to being succesful in the health industry, whether you are a personal trainer, massage therapist, or chiropractic????

BE GOOD AT WHAT YOU DO!

Get clients results, make patients feel better, have the knowledge AND continue to learn in your respective field.

Now, I am not trying to be cocky, or be a "show-off", but since spring, we have had 8 Patients fly in from around North America for treatment, been flown out to different parts of the states to treat athletes, have had a wait list, and been asked to lecture at several different events.

We didn't get this oppurtunity because we have a great system, market our facility and TEAM well, or make false promises. I became one of the best in Manual Therapy at what I do and my patients get results, feel better, and can get back to sport faster!

The Secret: Be the best at what you do, strive for results, then Market and Create a system.

I am a huge believer in passion is success. Love what you do, and success will follow.

Ask yourself, what have you done today to make your practice and fitness business better?

For me personally, I have a goal that each day I ready an Anatomy book for atleast 30 minutes, and read3 Chapters of a business book each. This does not include other time I spend surfing Blogs, Facebook  (some may say wasting time, but you haven't read Mark Young's Blog), and reviewing literature.

What do you do each day to make yourself that best at what you do??

Over the weekend, I am going to finish the Article on "Creating a Niche Market". We are going to post a follow up to our blog on Monday.

2. We have a new trainer at the Canadian Human Performance Centre and Dynamic Training & Rehabilitation: Jeff Aldham from Jeff Aldham, from All Body Conditioning.

Here is an Interview with Jeff:

By the way, Jeff is the one in the gym wearing purple shirt and shoes, he claims it is his business colours.

3. One more thing that we are working on:

We are working with Kasia, a competitor in UFE (Ultimate Fitness Events). Kasia has a hip and low back issue that we have been rehabing. We have decided to film or manual therapy treatments and corrective exercise sessions so everyone can have a look on what an athlete goes through from Injury to Sport Performance. Watching the Video's you can get some cool Corrective Exercise and Soft Tissue Work Idea's as well!

4. Hockey is almost here. We are headed out to the pre-season game this evening to see how everyone is looking!

Have a great weekend!

Importance of Creating a Niche Business Market

Taylor and Myself have come a long way in the health and fitness industry. In my opinion (and I am very Biased), we make one of the best teams out there. Taylor has mastered the Female Fitness and Bootcamp Niche, while I have become known in Manuel Therapy, Soft Tissue’s, and “Scar Work Guy”. We are compatible and don’t step on each other’s toes. We have had mentors, help, and support throughout our all path, and we are still not done. Our goal know is to make one of the top fitness facilities and alternative health care clinics around, our second goal is to make the practitioners and trainers around us better. When we bring on new TEAM Members (not employee’s, or staff, TEAM MEMBERS) We have an in-house mentorship program, where we work with our TEAM, showing them the blue prints, and giving them support to be successful.
Note: Picture above. This is when we first started out, training Rep Soccer and Hockey Teams outside. This particular team was very succesful that year. 7 out 12 of the players above are now either player college or semi-pro in the United States and abroad!
It has blown up that Taylor is receiving offers to franchise her bootcamp, and I am getting emails from doctors and physiotherapist from as far as California and England wanting to know what we do differently. We have begun to share more information online, through Blogs, Podcast, BlogSpotRadio, Now were moving into Youtube Video’s and Articles. Like we have stated before, my goal for the BP blog, is to share performance information, whether it be Performance in Business, or Patient Performance: From Rehab to Sports Conditioning, I want this blog to help you!

If you would like to learn more on how we can help you, than keep posted to our blog or you may contact our office at: info@dynamictraining.ca or at our Burlington Office: 905-637-4934

I have been working on an article for a Massage Therapy Magazine that will be published in December. My goal is to reach out to Manual Therapist to determine a service they are known for. Whether it be; Corrective Exercise, Pain Management, Sports Injury I want to help therapist reach and exceed their potential.

Take a look at the article, let me know what you think, and we will see you in a few days for another blog post!

Article: Creatng a Niche in the Health Care Business

In my opinion, this is a missing link with every trainer and therapist. They try to do it all, and help every client/patient that walks through that door.

I had a great conversation with a Sports Injury and Massage Therapist the other day that made me realize a component in our business that most of us, if not all, are missing!

CREATING A NICHE AND BEING THE BEST AT WHAT YOU ARE KNOWN TO DO!

To many times when I mentor Therapist and Trainers, I visit their website and I have no idea what they do! The practitioner/trainer lists every single course and “speciality” they have ever done. It comes from the mentality of more is better.

I am not trying to rip into anybody because I was like this too. When I was going through College for Manuel Therapy and Massage Therapy, I was in a separate course every weekend. Over a two year period, I spent $20,000 in every course I still have never used.

The beginning of my practice, I was treating everything possible!

Muscle Spasm; No Problem, Fertility Issue; Let’s Fix it!, Not Regular?; We can do Something about it!

After years of ignoring my mentors, I realized that this wasn’t working! My patients were not returning to use my services.

But Why???

We are going to post the other half of this Blog Wednesday. Come back and check it out why it is so important to have a niche market and how I created one, and the blue print that you may use!

Also, check out this Youtube Video of Fit-Escape Bootcamp:

Decompact that Low Back!

It has been extremely busy at Dynamic and the Canadian Human Performance Centre. We have a couple HUGE announcements that will be release by the end of the week. With Fall now here, all our university athletes are back to school (some are back, pre-season injuries and were already home sick from our facility), and professional athletes are back in camp. To get this blog back on a roll I want to address a few questions and concerns that I have seen over the past few months.

 Lumbar Spine Deloading AND Decompacting

In our Blog and when I talk to athletes that I am working with from a treatment, corrective exercise, and rehab perspective when I use the word DELOAD, I am referring to taking pressure off an area. This will help prevent repetitive strain injuries, compression injuries (very common to LOW BACK PAIN, in particular Facet Irritation) and help soft tissue rebound from strenuous work or exercises.

Most Sports Conditioning Guru’s will refer to DELOAD as taking a week of from a program, or modifying a particular program to let body recoup. I am on the opposite end of the spectrum, my job is to help athletes stay injury free and rehab, our Sports Conditioning Guys at Canadian Human Performance Centre have the other job.

Below in this blog, we are going to go through techniques and exercises to help take pressure off of your back. THIS IS A GENERAL OUTLINE for Blog Readers to spark curiosity and motivate to learn some anatomy; it will not treat low back pain or dysfunction, but most certainly can help manage symptoms.

Helping to alleviate pressure of your lumbar spine is great for anyone with a history of “low Back pain”, Facet Compression Issues, or just dysfunction.

There are going to be critics reading this blog, and watching our video’s and will write, Adam forgot to talk about Thoracic Mobility, make sure Navicular Bone is not following proper PRM. The list can go on. This is an outline, and we are just taking one or two exercise that my staff and I prescribe on a daily basis for our patients and athletes.

Note: For Corrective Exercises Techniques, we will be posting a blog coming up.

Soft Tissue Preparation: Before & After Exercise, Morning and Evening

SMFR and Soft Tissue preparation will do just that, prepare your tissue for work. These techniques will also help break adhesions, promote proper muscle health.

Your lumbar spine is the weak link in your body. Compared to your Thoracic Spine, there are minimal major actions of your lumbar spine except for stability.

Unilateral Leg Work Post Bilateral Low Rep Exercise: After Heavy Lift

This is one of the most important aspects of Lower Back Deload or Decompact that I recommend. Usually, in our programs, our sports conditioning guys will use a split squat or Bulgarian split squat, I agree with this exercise. Single leg or Unilateral Exercise will activate muscles like Glute Med.

This particular exercise will also dynamically stretch Psoas Major, Rectus Femoris, and will force your body to keep proper spinal aligment.

Lumbar Distraction: Post –SMFR/Dynamic Warm-up, Home Care

Video: Decompact Your Low Back. Pt. 1

Eretor Spinae Health: These muscles will help keep the stability and prevent lumbar vertebrae go into flexion at most common L2 on L3, L3 on L4 (Most important Vertebrae, for another blog post), L5 on S1.

Quick Mention of L5 on S1: Take a look at biomechanics of this segment, with hip flexion, the spinal process on L5 should rotate the opposite direction. If there is a adhesion or lesion present and the L5 vertebrae moves same way,

    Side Bar:

How to test: Have your patient standing up, kneel behind (ask for permission and explain what you are going to do), place one finger on L5 Spinous Process and another finger on the Ischial Tuberosity. Have client/patient move leg into Hip Flexion, What way does it Move? Compaction? Lesion? Dysfunction?

A major component of Lumbar Spine or Low Back Pain is Pelvic Dysfunction, whether it be a visceral component, mechanical, or myofascial. There are many issues that should be assessed and addressed for proper biomechanics and tissue health.

I have a lot of Clients and friend that read this blog looking for business advice as well. I also want to include “tid-bits” of information that make you think, look at your business, and grow!

I had a conversation with a Sports Injury and Massage Therapy practitioner who is in the first few months of his new business. We had a great conversation on creating a NICHE business and not being an "all in one"

We are going to post the conversation and why it is important to create a Niche Market that you should have your business aimed towards.

Eric from TruBody Fitness and Myself had a few minutes to kill yesterday afternoon, so we decided to film a quick interview, check it out:

Summer Re-Cap and Moving Forward!

This past summer has been one of the busiest summer in our Clinic and Gym at DT&R. We had atheltes come through from every major university in canada getting ready for the 2011 season, travelled around the states treating, and got the ball rolling on a number of major projects that we are excitted to introduce in the coming weeks.

A few things to look forward to in fall:

- We have joined forces with a few other giants in the health and fitness industry and opening a new facility, and will take DT&R and Bogar Performance (BP) to the next level. This is ll we can say, readers will have to wait until we make the big announcement with more details!

- BP is changing focus and will be offering webinars, in-house seminars, and online information for therapist, doctors, and trainers to expand there practice/business. This is a Blue Print and information that we use to make DT&R one of the leading Altertive Health Care and Rehab facilities in Ontario and known nationally.

We are calling this Synergistic Business System.

If you are in the healthcare field and looking to expand your practice, make a better income with working less hours, and saving your body/hands, than look forward to the information we are going to present. It is going to be phenominal!

- We have been working with a number of other health care practitioners and are putting together course that are reconized for Continueing Education Credits or Units. These course are going to be on Business, Techniques, and Treatment protocols. They practitioners that we have partnered with are the best in there respective fields, and want to help other therapists and doctors!

On another note, DT&R held the first measurments/weigh-ins this morning at our facility for the Fall $1000.00 Weight Loss Challenge. I have never seen so many motivated and happy people with the same goal, working together!

I have never been more motivated to be in the helth and fitness industry than today!!

Interview with Anthony, Creator of TRAIN or BE TRAINED

Last night, I had a visit to my office from the creator of TRAIN or BE TRAINED, Anthony Perreira. This is a phenominal project that he has put together to help the health and fitness industry. In my opinion, this should be on everyone's favorite tab.

This is a web based show, that will showcase 4 diferent trainers every month. By Viewing and Voting you could win tons of cool prizes.

Check out an interview that we had with Anthony:

I am doing a lot of research on a new fad of Skatemills that a lot of my hockey players are working on now. Everyday I see a new injury that we have to rehab from hockey players using this new equipment. Do you think it changes the biomechanics of a hockey players skating? Is it benefitial or useful for hockey training?

Let me know your comments.

Side Plank Row and a New Business Book

The last two weeks have been very hectic, the last Perform Better Summit of the year in Long Beach, finishing up a mulitple projects for the upcoming fall/winter, and the once a year Can Fit Pro confrence in Toronto.

As I had the pleasure to interact with a number of trainers from throughout North America it has come across that there is still a lack of knowledge with the how to properly train the core. Over the next few weeks, we are going to dive in and do sections on what exactly is the "core", how to train it, and most importantly, how to asses!

If you are still training core with Sit-ups, Crunch's, or just normal plank every workout, first buy a Dr. Stuart McGill Text book, and second keep posted to this blog.

We are going to jump right into a great exercise for Functional Core Strength. The pictures from two angles are below.

Althought there is a rowing componant to this exercise, it is actually for core strength. We use a Side Plank Row in final phase of low back rehabilitation program or BP correctional exercise program becuase this exercise will stimulate the proprioceptors in the Multifidus muscles from Lumbar and Thoracic, has minimal Lumbar Movement (If you follow Stuart McGill, you know this is a big deal) and activley stimulates the Transverse Oblique.

Implement this exercise into your program. Focus on keeping proper spine alignment and do not worry about how much you are rowing in terms of weight. This exercise should be done after a mobility phase of a MacroCycle.

On a business note, I always have 2 books on the go. One Business related, and the other rehab/sport medicine/alternative therapy/fitness oriented. I came across a great business book on the plane home from Los Angeles that I believe should be on everyones TO READ list: Delivering Happiness by Tony Hsieg

This is a great book written by the founder of LinkExchange and Zappos.com. I am a big believer in exposing yourself to all books that could help you learn more, even if it is not a fitness or health related book. Business is Business!

One last shout out if you have not yet heard, through Dynamic Training & Rehabilitation and Fit-Escape Bootcamp Systems we are offering a $1000.00 Weight Loss Challenge. We are only accepting a few more participants so hurry to get your spot.

Day 1: Perform Better Summit

This year has been to date, one of the busiest years from a business and personal perspective. I always try to keep a few things in check: make sure to continue to grow as a person, and to be one of the leading and innovative practitioners in the rehab and correctice exercise field.

There has been one thing that would help my business and personal life improve: The Perform Better Summit. There are only 3 of these a year. Most of the readers of this blog are from Canada and may not of heard of Perform Better, if you haven't than google it.

Next weekend is Canfit Pro in Toronto, Ontario. Usually, there is a couple of good presenters, networking and business card handout is completed, with a few drinks to end of the weekend. Taylor and I usually take the 45 minute drive to T.O and attend the 3 day seminar, that has thousands of fitnness finatics, topics that aren't usefull, and products that are driven to make a profit and have no place in a gym.

Last week, a few events were put on the backburner, so we took a last minute flight from Buffalo NewYork to Los Angeles to catch the last summit of the year. We decided (wasn't the toughest desicion), to attend this summit instead of the Can Fit Pro. Without a a second though, we embarked on a 7 Hour Flight. The worst part is, the two people I had with me are both 6 weeks out of the Natural Ontario BodyBuilding Championships, and I got their peanuts and pretzels on the plane.

In the last 2 years, I have spent over $25,000 in education tools alone. This includes all my course (osteopathy, TCM, Acupuncture Upgrades, Books, Webinars, etc...) The Perform Better Summit was $379.00. In the first day, I have learned more in this summit to take our business to the next level, then every course combine. I am not saying those courses were a waste of time, this is just the biggest bang for our buck!

We had multiple lectures throughout the day from the greats like: Alwyn Cosgrove, Martin Rooney (my opinion of the best lecturers), Dr. Stuart McGill, and Thomas Plumber. I am not going to go into very much detail on everything that is going on down here, so we filmed a videoblog in our hotel room on a blackberry phone.

Check it out:

We filmed the video on our blackberry, so turn up the volume and listen carefully.

The Long Lost Pushup - From Rehab to Sports Conditioning

What ever happened to the pushup?

It can help with strength gains, balance, functional assesment, shoulder health and the list goes on! In this new age of supplementation science, big bench press movements, and shirts with no sleeves, we somehow lost one of the basic princples and exercises that should be present in every program.

It is an exercise that develops so many muscles that are usually the cause of many of my patients concerns when the first step into my office. Before writting this article, I started to monitor new patients coming through my door, there main complaint and number of treatments it took to resolve the issue.

The week of June 28th, 73% of new patients had a main concern of Anterior Shoulder pain while exercise. 100% of those patients did not follow a proper program design that included dynamic warm-up, NMA (neuromuscular activation), and Self Myofascial Release. And one more thing that was missing in each program?? - The progression of the pushup.

Why is the pushup so important - Rehabilitation, Prevention, and Strength.

From a rehabilitation and corrective exercise stand point, the pushup can asses for imbalances.

A progressive pushup, when done properly and effectively can be strength weak postural muscle like the Serratus Anterior and will speed up recovery time of shoulder rehabilitation.

As a strength and conditioning exercises you can recruit more muscle fibres when doing pushups as part of your dynamic warmup. The pushup will also recruit weak muscle like the Serratus Anterior, and Infraspinatus, Supraspinatus and Rear Deltoid.

How do you advance a pushup?

- Change the elevation of the legs
- Add External Resistance like chains and bands
- Add instability like the picture at the begining of the blog
- Incorperate a row into the exercise
-  Also, try adding an explosive movement or core activation during the pushup.

All in all, don't forget about the pushup. I my opinion it is one of the most important exercises that will complement any rehab or sports conditioning program.

Want to fix your posture, get stronger and become pain free through corrective exercise, Neuromuscular Activation, and Self Myofascial Release? Then email us at bogarperformance@gmail.com to learn more!

Coming July 12th, 2010, I willbe launching a new website for Therapist, Trainers, Doctors, and fitness enthusiest. This website will be based soley on the business aspect of the health industry and how practitioners and trainers can evolve there personal and finicial life in a competitive market!

Now Availible at Dynamic Health Care Clinic: Shock Therapy

Now availible at the Dynamic Health Care clinic in Burlington, Ontario is Shock Wave Therapy. SHock Wave Therapy or SWT has been around for decades but not until recenlty it has been marketed mainstream by health care practitioners to athletes.

Shockwavce therapy devices are the latest tool that are beeing taken out of professional locker rooms and used by weekend warriors and amateur level athletes.

Electrical stimulation essentially works by tricking the body. To get muscles to contract in an ordinary situation, the brain sends an electrical signal to the appropriate nerves, which then stimulate the muscle fiber.

As people age, however, certain neural pathways become predominant. When the brain sends a signal, the same fibers get tickled; the muscles that get ignored begin to atrophy.

Your body is very efficient. Why should it conserve something that it isn't using

An ordinary person who doesn't work out much uses around 35 percent of their muscle mass, while someone who works out somewhat frequently can boost that number to closer to 50 percent, he said. Body builders might use 80 percent to 85 percent.

To excite those dormant fibers, the Sport sends a signal directly to the nerves via electrodes attached to your leg, bypassing the brain all together. It stimulates as many fibers as possible, not just the ones the nerve customarily excites. When the current begins to flow, your muscles immediately jump into a hard mound.

At BP and Dynamic, we also perform Myofascial techniques to further improve the process.

We can recruit up to 99 percent of your muscle fiber. That stimulated muscle tissue is then more receptive to signals from your brain the next time you run or bike in the real world

Despite being painful and awkward feeling at times, the treatment process has show to reduce injuries and additionally builds up muscle tissue and can take pressure of bones and joints.

Through Bogar Performance and Dynamic Training & Rehabilitation, Adam has developed a unique version of SWT that is catered towards power and size athletes.

At BP, we currenlty combine our Myofascial Techniques, SMFR, and NMA in conjunction with Shock Wave Therapy. This route gives the tissue for fascial system to allow new growth, more nutrition, and movement between tissues.

In my niche which is bodybuilding, we are currently performing this type of therapy prior to an athlete hitting the stage. It will increase vascularization, decrease any adhesions that may been created during the final week of preparation and overall, helpo the athelete look better.

Check this blog over the upcoming weekend for Video of this form of Therapy.
